Campaign Goal: $ 7,500,000. Amount Raised: $ 7,635,895
With government funding alone, we have always been able to do a good job providing basic supports. However, our mission has never been to just do a good job. We are committed to building bold futures and supporting courageous living.
Thanks to your support of our campaign, funds will be used to:

An Audacious Idea
Throughout Penn-Mar Human Services’ 41 years, we have always been empowered by the idea of focusing on what’s next, both for our organization and in our pursuit of supporting those with intellectual and developmental disabilities to always Live Courageously. And these past two years, one of our primary focuses was our most ambitious venture yet – the $7.5 million Building Bold Futures campaign. Bringing this endeavor to life was no easy task. But as history has taught us, while transformative change is never easy, it is deeply necessary, especially if we want to build a more inclusive world where everyone has the opportunity to pursue their dreams.
An Extraordinary Achievement
As you may imagine, upon hearing about our very large fundraising goal (during an international pandemic no less), there was some understandable skepticism as to whether it was possible to achieve. Yet as we unveiled our plan, formed after months of research and discussion, that skepticism quickly turned to enthusiasm. Our incredible Penn-Mar community rallied around the campaign, making bold commitments and courageous gifts to ensure a brighter future not just for the sake of the people we support today, but for those who will need our services decades from now. Thank you for believing and investing in our mission.
Inspired by the evening, a waiter at Penn-Mar’s Annual Gala made a pledge to the Building Bold Futures campaign
Penn-Mar’s 31st Annual Gala event in March was the final homestretch for the Building Bold Futures campaign. As CEO Greg Miller urged guests to “dig deep,” a waiter in the room was listening intently to the appeal. Pete Heubeck and his wife Kelly were serving at the Gala by chance. Their “near and dear friend” Jack Elsby, the staffing manager for the event, asked them to come on board last minute, as he was short-staffed. Moved by Penn-Mar’s mission, Pete approached his wife Kelly and said, “Honey, what do you think? It’s a great cause and we can afford to give.” Kelly readily agreed, and the Heubecks, who are no strangers to life’s challenges, made a generous gift.
National recognition for new Direct Support Professional Vanessa Cooke
You know you’ve found your true calling when in less than a year into your new profession, you’re recognized as one of the best at what you do. Such is the case – rare, we might add – of Penn-Mar DSP Vanessa Cooke, who was selected, out of 350 nominations, as the recipient of ANCOR’s 2023 DSP of the Year Award for Maryland. “I’m still a little shocked about the award,” said Vanessa. “Just being able to see the joy that’s created in someone’s life through the support that we provide every day is an honor,” she continued. “I love being a role model and a cheerleader in people’s lives. I don’t take this job lightly because it’s a big responsibility that we have as DSPs to help people with their ideal lives.”
Fashion Show collaboration between Jemicy School and Penn-Mar highlights inclusion and innovation
A new partnership with the Jemicy School in Owings Mill, MD, which educates students with dyslexia and related language-based learning differences, is already making a splash. With a mission closely aligned to Penn-Mar’s, an opportunity to collaborate on an accessible fashion show arose. Jemicy’s fashion students leapt at the opportunity to create custom, accessible outfits for people supported by Penn-Mar, and in May 2023, unveiled their creations via a fashion show event staged at Penn-Mar’s Central location. Twenty original designs were modeled by people with disabilities, each created with unique features and customizations. Models, designers, and attendees had a wonderful time!
While we are incredibly grateful for each and every donor who has supported this campaign, please note that this list includes those who’ve donated $1,000 and above. Bolded names indicate donors who have contributed a Leadership Gift ($100,000) or above.

*In Memoriam
Beth and Jon’s enthusiasm in taking on such a significant role in Building Bold Futures, and their lasting dedication to Penn-Mar, was instrumental.
Sadly, Jon and his brother, Tim, passed away in a tragic accident in January 2023. Yet his influence was felt even at the March 2023 Gala, when we hit our campaign goal of $7.5 million, and over $120,000 was contributed in his honor.
Beth and Jon’s leadership, expertise, friendship, and generosity have had a deep and lasting impact on Penn-Mar. Their immeasurable contributions to Penn-Mar, and to Building Bold Futures, will be with us for generations to come.
As Jon would quote from Chief Dan George: “Endeavor to Persevere.” In his honor and in his memory, we will do exactly that. We are grateful for all who have made generous contributions to Building Bold Futures, ensuring that we move courageously forward.
