About the Building Bold Futures Campaign
HOW DOES THE SUCCESS OF THE BUILDING BOLD FUTURES CAMPAIGN IMPACT THE MISSION OF PENN-MAR?
With government funding alone, we have always been able to do a good job providing basic supports. However, our mission has never been to just do a good job. We are committed to building bold futures and supporting courageous living.
Thanks to your support of our campaign, funds will be used to:
- Provide the best possible services to the people we support and their families
- Continually invest in our critically important Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) via our Career Ladders program and other initiatives
- Strengthen our organization both now and in the future

$1,523,490 to Enhance Service Delivery
- Sustain the ongoing efforts of our Belonging Initiative to better support, appreciate, recruit, and retain team members, so that everyone can experience a gratifying career path.
- Celebrated the 3rd year of our Professional Development Program geared towards high potential DSPs who are interested in moving into management positions – this year’s class has 9 graduates.
- Purchase 11 vehicles this fiscal year including cars and wheelchair accessible vans to make transportation easier for the people we support.
- Continue to implement new technology, from better data management tools to assistive technology, that will improve the quality of life and increase independence for the people we support.
$2,796,208 to grow the Michael James Pitts Endowment
- This endowment continues to support our nationally recognized Career Ladders program for Direct Support Professionals.
- Career Ladders provides education, credentialling, and performance-based incentive pay to Penn-Mar’s most critical workforce, our Direct Support Professionals. Penn-Mar retains 90% of DSPs who have earned their credentials, ultimately enabling the people we support to live higher-quality lives.
$2,280,297 to grow the General Endowment
This endowment provides innovative funding that can be used wherever it’s needed most, allowing us to implement new methods of support as better approaches are discovered.
$1,035,900 to Complete Construction at the Far Hills Site
The build out of our Far Hills location to centralize Pennsylvania operations and reduce the expenses and challenges associated with running multiple locations, is complete! With final construction on this project wrapped at the end of 2023, we are excited to spend 2024 in a centralized space.

The outpouring of support was awe-inspiring and because of this effort, Penn-Mar’s future is perhaps the most solid it’s ever been. Penn-Mar continues to approach problem-solving by focusing on action, strategy, and mission acceleration, rather than merely raising funds without a clear plan for how they’d be utilized. LIVING COURAGEOUSLY FOR DECADES TO COME
An Audacious Idea
Throughout Penn-Mar Human Services’ 41 years, we have always been empowered by the idea of focusing on what’s next, both for our organization and in our pursuit of supporting those with intellectual and developmental disabilities to always Live Courageously. And in 2022-2023, one of our primary focuses was our most ambitious venture yet – the $7.5 million Building Bold Futures campaign. Bringing this endeavor to life was no easy task. But as history has taught us, while transformative change is never easy, it is deeply necessary, especially if we want to build a more inclusive world where everyone has the opportunity to pursue their dreams.
An Extraordinary Achievement
As you may imagine, upon hearing about our very large fundraising goal (during an international pandemic no less), there was some understandable skepticism as to whether it was possible to achieve. Yet as we unveiled our plan, formed after months of research and discussion, that skepticism quickly turned to enthusiasm. Our incredible Penn-Mar community rallied around the campaign, making bold commitments and courageous gifts to ensure a brighter future not just for the sake of the people we support today, but for those who will need our services decades from now. Thank you for believing and investing in our mission.
Assistive Tech Offers Something for Everybody
As Enabling Technology Coordinator, Allis Kensing educates our team members about the benefits of Assistive Tech and the many tools available to increase the independence of the people they support. By definition, Assistive Technology is any item, piece of equipment, software program, or product system that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of persons with disabilities. With our new “Empowering Technology” service, Penn-Mar is positioning itself to be the leading provider of enabling technology for people with disabilities. To attain that goal, we have partnered with SHIFT Training to provide e-learning solutions for our DSPs and supervisors to help them infuse Assistive Technology into our culture and person-centered mission. Assistive Tech offers something for everybody.
Move to Far Hills Facility Brings PA Programs and Administration Under One Roof
The completion of our Far Hills facility will be the culmination of many years of thoughtful, strategic planning to ensure that our organization is providing the best environment possible for the people we support and a high-quality world-class facility for our team members. With the completion of the renovation, the new building will meet the way our services are provided today, and in the future, and most effectively help us achieve our mission. The success of our Building Bold Futures Campaign helped us meet our financial goals and lower the amount of debt we were holding on the building. We are well positioned for the next several decades, with expansion capabilities if needed, and the advantage of now having all of our teams in a common location.
Penn-Mar Human Services’ Commitment to Team Culture Rewarded with National Honor
Penn-Mar Human Services has been named a 2023 Culture Innovator in the Kudos Best Culture Awards. Penn-Mar’s dedication to culture has been a priority since the founding in 1981 and remains a steadfast priority. This is further validated by the introduction of Penn-Mar’s Belonging Initiative in 2022, which gives Penn-Mar’s more than 500 employees an opportunity to share their individual work environment realities and challenges. It allows them to be more connected to leadership and recognize any areas for improvement to help ensure that Penn-Mar’s culture continues to be dynamic and inclusive. Winners of the Culture Innovator Award demonstrate an impactful commitment to the employee experience and have fostered a strong and supportive culture through creative efforts.

Much of the campaign’s success can be attributed to co-chairs Beth Pitts-Madonna and the late Jon Kinsley.
Beth and Jon’s enthusiasm in taking on such a significant role in Building Bold Futures, and their lasting dedication to Penn-Mar, was instrumental.
Sadly, Jon and his brother, Tim, passed away in a tragic accident in January 2023. Yet his influence was felt even at the March 2023 Gala, when we hit our campaign goal of $7.5 million, and over $120,000 was contributed in his honor.
Beth and Jon’s leadership, expertise, friendship, and generosity have had a deep and lasting impact on Penn-Mar. Their immeasurable contributions to Penn-Mar, and to Building Bold Futures, will be with us for generations to come.
As Jon would quote from Chief Dan George: “Endeavor to Persevere.” In his honor and in his memory, we will do exactly that. We are grateful for all who have made generous contributions to Building Bold Futures, ensuring that we move courageously forward.
